Millian’s Fool-proof System for Suspensions in the NHL
I propose a cumulative suspension system based on 4 parts:
The Intent, The Result, The Injury, The Intangibles
The Intent:
– This would be a scale from 1-10 games suspension, based on how deliberate the intent to injure was.
The Result:
– Perhaps another 1-10 game scale based on what happened once the other player was struck. i.e. No injury, stitches, blood, concussion etc.
The Injury:
– If a player misses game time due to injury from the infraction, the offending player must serve suspension, equal amount of games missed or 20 games. Which ever comes first. This length could be based on an initial medical examination.
(For Instance, injured player doctor states that he will miss 2 weeks with a concussion. Calculate how many games fall in that 2 week span, and thats the amount of games suspended. )
The Intangibles:
– If a player commits an intent to injure, and ends a players career, ala Steve Moore, result is lifetime NHL suspension. That leaves open the possibility of playing in AHL, overseas, etc. They can make at least some kind of living, they just lose NHL privileges.
Examples:
–Alexander Ovechkin’s knee-on-knee to Tim Gleason:
Intent: 6
Result: 1
Inury: 0
Intangibles: n/a
Total Suspension: 7 games
–Daniel Carcillo’s Fight with Matt Bradley
Intent: 4
Result: 3
Injury:1
Intangibles 2 (previous suspensions)
Total Suspension: 10 games*
* I disagreed with the bulk of the penalties, and the suspension to begin with, so this is just for demo purposes
Two factors:
First, if a player is injured on a play that gets him suspended, he begins serving his sentence, when he is medically cleared to play
Second, if he has a history of suspensions, or is a repeat offender, that factors into the “Intangibles” column.
This system limits the subjectiveness of the overall suspension by Colin Campbell, and also allows some flexibility in the degree of the infractions. This needs to be worked out further, but when they hire me for the job I’ll get right on it. For now, this is where we start

I mean seriously, do I need to say anything further?
